The Idea

After circling the globe at age 40 and asking life’s big questions, our founder returned to Iowa with clarity: physicians needed a faster way to find jobs than waiting for quarterly print journals. At the time, if you wanted to advertise an opening, you had to pay for space in a specialty magazine—and hope the right candidate stumbled across it months later. That just wasn’t good enough. And so, Physician’s Employment was born, a print publication dedicated solely to connecting physicians with opportunities.

The world of publishing was shifting fast. Digital production lowered typesetting costs, but postage prices skyrocketed and devoured every savings. Despite producing a polished magazine, profitability never materialized. The writing was on the wall: physician recruitment was not going to live in print forever. Something new was needed.

A Subway Epiphany

Sometimes big shifts start with small moments. While waiting in line at Subway, our founder struck up a conversation with a woman who casually mentioned she had just recruited a physician through the internet. The response? A confused, “What’s the internet?” That chance encounter sparked the idea that would change our path forever.

With help from a local friend starting an internet service company, we launched one of the very first online job boards for physicians. We took every listing from the print magazine and uploaded it. Within three days, the site generated more candidate responses than three months of print ever had. The future was suddenly clear, and we were all in.

Yahoo! Days

Back when Yahoo’s directory was king, we managed to land our site under “Healthcare → Employment.” With virtually no competition, we ranked in the top results and were swamped with traffic. It was the gold rush era of the internet, and we were right at the front of the line.

The contrast was stunning. Our print magazine had been lucky to receive 125–150 postcards per issue, if we were lucky! But the website? It was drawing 200–300 inquiries every single day. And at a fraction of the cost. From a little town in Iowa, we were suddenly facilitating physician job matches nationwide.

Then came Google. Search transformed overnight. What had been a wide-open highway of free traffic became a crowded marketplace. We went from ranking easily on Yahoo to competing for space on Google’s first page. The search game had changed, and we had to adapt fast.

Early search engine optimization was a mess—sites stuffed keywords onto pages until they were unreadable. It was the Wild West, with everyone scrambling to stay visible. Even as the economy plunged into recession, healthcare remained one of the few industries still adding jobs—gaining hundreds of thousands nationwide as hospitals, physician offices, and homecare services continued growing. That said, not every provider fared the same—some hospitals, particularly in hard-hit areas, had layoffs, hiring freezes, or service cuts. Through it all, PhysEmp stayed independent, lean, and committed to connecting physicians and employers—not just surviving the storm, but helping keep the momentum going.
